LZ Open SES (Simulated Emergency Situation) Contest 2014 - place: the Bulgarian Black Sea coast (see the map)

AIM: To improve the ability of the Amateur Radio Operators to act independently in case of distress or natural disasters when the conventional communications and power mains are broken and an immediate need of exchange of information between the place of the disaster and the outside world is needed.

DATE AND TIME: Annually, Every first Saturday of September,
from 08.00 to 12.00 UTC (4 hours total contest time).
For 2014 - September 6, Saturday


PARTICIPANTS: Amateur Radio Operators World-Wide


EXCHANGE: Six figures: the serial Nr of the QSO and the serial Nr of the last corespondent's QSO. RST is not required. The RST will be considered 599 for all valid contacts. This is to be used for QSL purposes.
First QSO exchange: 001 000 See the example bellow
QSO with the same station is allowed after 29 minutes regardless of band (Any station can be worked once every 30 minutes - on the 30-th minute or after it) . For example : QSO at 00:02 next QSO is OK at 00:32 or later. (The seconds are not important!)

POINTS: The unconfirmed QSOs will not count for points. Each valid QSO counts 1 point regardless of country or continent (Everyone works everyone )
No preferance for working DX or LZ stations, no multipliers.

The QSO will not bring points to both correspondents if  the difference in the
times is more than 3 minutes, or there is a mistake in one of the call signs or
in the serial numbers.
The QSO will not bring points to the correspondent who has not kept 30 minutes minimum time to connect the same station again.

FINAL SCORE: The sum of the QSO points.

Portable Stations (SENS) - Simulated Emergency Network Stations concentrated at one QTH in Bulgaria
In 2014 the event will take place at the Black Sea town of Chernomorets (see the map) located about 20km South East of Burgas. additional rules for this category

Guests, visitors, family members, sponsors of teams, everyone is invited to join us.

Foreign stations Europe : Multi operators, Single operator High pwr, Single operator Low pwr and QRP (5W)
Foreign stations Outside Europe: Multi operators, Single operator High pwr, Single operator Low pwr and QRP (5W).
Bulgarian stations: Multi operators, Single operator High pwr, Single operator Low pwr and QRP (5W).
ORP participants please do not add /QRP after your Call Sign - just mark in your log that you have operated QRP.
Field Operation Stations (FIELD World) - regardless of country or continent. Maximum output power - 100 Watts. The power source must be something other than commercial power mains (any kind of batteries and generators are allowed) Add "/p" after the callsign. Our suggestion to those participants is to get organised by the local clubs or individuals and to concentrate at one location so that they can meet before and after the contest and make this event more enoyable for themself and for their families too.
The Multi Operators Stations may use unlimited number of working sets connected in a network. The only limit is that all the stations must be located in the same call area.
The Single and the Multi Operators Stations are allowed to use DX Clusters, Skimmers, decoders or any other kind of technologies that they think might help.
The aim is to give a push to the new technologies combined with high operator skills.

ADDITIONAL RULES concerning the
Portable Stations (SENS) - Simulated Emergency Network Stations which will be located along the Black Sea coastline at the vicinity of Chernomorets see the map, Bulgaria.

The Participants in this category will operate under the main rules of the contest and the following additional conditions:
Every team consists of two operators - leading operator and support operator.
Special call signs from the serie LZ6AA-LZ6FZ will be used. Every team will choose his callsign on arrival. (Everyone please bring your license !) QSL manager will be LZ3FN Hristo Ignatov
The support operators will prefarebly be males under 25 years of age or females (no age limit) but this is not an obligatory rule. They will support the main operator by all means and will keep an VHF FM connection with the Headquarters. They must report once an hour the number of the contacts established.
There will be two sub categories formed on the base of the equipment used: QRP and Unlimited.
The QRP Subcategory participants will use an equipment that will be powered by a battery of 12V/12Ah maximum - (recommended output power: 5 watts).
The Unlimited Subcategory participants are allowed to use 100 watts maximum output power, but the recommended power will be up to 30W (any kind of batteries and generators are allowed).
The antenna have to be a single element of the following type: half wave dipole or inverted V, one wave lenght closed loop or a vertical. Every team will prepare and erect his antenna as an important part of this excercise. We recommend telescopic fishing rods or aluminium tubes to be used to support dipoles or vertical elements. Climbing on the trees or throwing stones and sticks is strictly forbitten ! Using trees to support the antenna is allowed at maximum height of 2.50m - within the range of the human reaching.

Please note - the competition is not the main goal ! This is a "Simulated Emergency Situation" training where every single participant is a winner himself. The fact that portable stations are able to establish contacts with other portable stations in the area as well as to exchange information with other Amateur Radio Stations throughout the world at the same time is very important. We will show that a portable QRP station powered by small battery which can be charged by solar cells and this way to be completely independant for an unlimited period of time is able to establish DIRECT CONTACT and to successfully exchange messages with other such stations located all over the world. The most important in this case is the fact that all those radio stations are operated by Amateur Radio Enthusiasts and they are completely independant of any political , governmental and so on institutions. We act individually and we can get easily self organised when needed.

Now the story in brief :
ARRIVAL in Chernomorets see the map
Everyone can choose when to arrive and how long he/she is willing to stay.
Early arrival - Thursday September 4 - 2 days before the contest.
Normal Arrival - Friday September 5 - the day before the contest.
Last minute arrival - Saturday Sept. 06 - before 08:00 UTC when the contest starts.
Every team have to bring his own equipment including the antenna, battery, hand held 2m VHF FM transceiver, HF transceiver, laptop and so on. Those who will arrive by car can take part in the contest from the car.
All the stations will be located along the coastline. Everyone's place will be marked on arrival so that each team could go there before the contest and test his equipment.
The registration of the team is done at the time when the team arrives and presents himself before the organiser. All the participants have to register prior the contest start.
The day of the Contest - Saturday Sept. 06
The teams that have been already registered may go to their working places at any time before the contest to setup their station and antenna. It is not forbitten to operate in the air before the contest.
It is team's responsibility to reach their place on time and to inform the headquarters that they are ready. The teams that have to reach their working places by foot may be helped by other teams with the transportation. All the teams are permitted to help the other teams in any given way before, after and during the contest. The support operators may connect and ask the other teams for help of any kind. They are allowed to move from place to place during the contest. Every team will feel as a part of another bigger team and an atmosphere of friendship and partnership will be kept.
After the contest (11:00 UTC) all the teams will get back to the hotel. They will have 20 hours to prepare and send their logs via E_mail to for cross checking.
Each log must be cabrillo format, time in UTC, full call sign in the E-mail subject. The name of the log file will be the callsign used.
Everyone who needs a help to prepare and send his log may be helped by anyone else. It is not forbitten to look at the other participant's logs and to verify any contact with them prior to submit.
The day After the Contest: - Sunday Sept. 07
The cross checking is in progress. The online results will be displayed at the web site Everyone could see all the logs and cross check any contact.
There will be discussions between the participants all over the palce. Everyone's suggestions or new ideas will be discussed and analised.
The final results will be announced at 20:00 in the evening. All the participants will be awarded with certificates. There will be additional awards for the first 3 teams in each category.

DEPARTURE from Chernomorets:
Everyone can choose when to depart. Every additional day of stay will be payed on place.
Scheduled Departure - Monday Sept. 08 - after breakfast

PRICE: There are many small family Hotels in Chernomorets. The prices are extremely low starting from 8(eight) Euro per bed/night in a double room. There are also many cosy restaurants at very affordable prices.The last year we have stayed in a family hotel just at the beach and we are going to make a reservation there for this year again.

The contest checking starts right after the contest. Every new log is automaticaly checked with the logs already received and the result is displayed online. You can see all the errors and compare the logs (cross-check).
All the stations who have sent logs will be classified (NO CHECK LOGS)

ABOUT THE CONTEST: We organize this international event in accordance with the rules of our domestic Bulgarian competitions. In this contest the exchange of the call signs does not mean that the contact is over. You still have to send and receive 6 figures WITH NO MISTAKE !!! High tempo non stop. The correspondents never end. You are allowed to work the same station up to 8 times durring the contest period. Our chain serial number system is unique and it has been used in all the domestic Bulgarian competitions since 1975. We are glad to see that it is well accepted outside Bulgaria.
